BONK: CANMORE CANADA CUP CHAMPION!

July 6, 2008 (Canmore, AB) - The Canada Cup returned to Canmore, Alberta’s “historic” Ziggy Gnarly course yesterday for the fifth and final XC event of the series. The 8.3km loop is famous among racers, with its Coal Chutes, amazing Rocky Mountain backdrop and great trails. Tim Heemskerk (AB) United Cycle Team won the Elite Men's race, while Raphaël Gagné (QC) Rocky Mountain took the overall title. In the Elite Women's race, it was Mical Dyck (AB) Trek/VW-Terrascape who grabbed another victory on her home course. Bianca Adolf (BC) Team BC/Natural Earth Racing was first in the Junior Women's race, while Evan Guthrie (BC) Total Restoration/Team BC beat out the rest of the Junior Men's field. At the end of the first lap of four, Heemskerk rode through solo with a one-minute lead over a chase group containing Stefan Widmer (BC) Rocky Mountain/K-Capital Source, Martin Lazarski (ON) Rocky Mountain/K-Capital Source, Matt Hadley (NB) Xprezo and Gagné. When Heemskerk came around again for the start of his third lap, he still held a minute lead, but his main group of pursuers had diminished to three: Lazarski, Widmer and Gagné. Hadley still held on to the top five at two minutes from the leader. For the last half of the race, Heemskerk kicked it up another notch, expanding his advantage to two minutes. In the end, Lazarski managed to make up some time, finishing 45s down from the winner, Heemskerk, and a minute ahead of third place, Widmer. Gagné finished fourth, followed by Hadley in fifth.

Bonk presents: The Golden Triangle

…presents…

The Golden Triangle

A 3-day, May long-weekend of supported road bicycling looping through the Canadian Rocky Mountains along the Golden Triangle route

Stág1
Est. km: 122

From Castle Mountain Chalets — upscale chalets with excellent services in Banff National Park — your bonk begins on the Bow Valley Parkway heading east toward the BC border, over the Continental Divide, up Vermilion Pass (elev. 1,640 m, 5,400 ft.), through Radium, and into Invermere. A cozy private house awaits with dinner at the legendary Strand’s Old House Restaurant.

“…good bunch, good food and accommodations. The support was excellent. It’s also nice to have a world class cyclist along to create confidence and provide support/advice.”
-Jeremy Shepherd, Partner-Owner
Lion’s Breath Yoga, Edmonton, AB

Stág2
Est. km: 128

On day 2, bonk climbs out of Invermere before settling into a flat, rolling spin toward Radium (elev. 808m, 2,651 ft.), and then along the Columbia River valley to Golden (elev. 800m, 2,625 ft.). Today’s Stág should be marked by a golden streak of dandelions bending toward the finish. After a hot tub, satiate your bonk at Eleven-22 where an Asian flare meets European and North American cuisine.

“…bonk is a fantastic odyssey of training. I’m going to Beijing with this tour under my belt. The support was terrific!”
-Jake Wetzel, Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race Winner 2007, 2004 Olympic Silver-Medalist in Rowing, Victoria, BC

“…thank you and your team for an incredible couple of days. It was fantastic to ride with you. It made for 3 full-day workouts for me. Look forward to hooking up again…”
-Gary Coleman, President
Big Freight Systems Inc., Steinbach, Manitoba

Stág3

About

Tim Heemskerk was born in Brunssum, Holland. Like some 13 year olds, he dreamt of owning a bike for the freedom and speed it offered. Tim received his master’s degree in Science in 1999. Five years later he moved to Canada and began Tim’s Training Programs (TTP) which caters to ambitious athletes seeking to raise their personal potential in cycling. Tim raced semi-pro on the road before switching to cross country, competing as a Dutch national team member in the World Mountain Bike Championships in 2002; and later becoming the Trans Rockies champion in 2007. He has won several other prestigious events such as 6-time Alberta champion in cylco cross and mountain bike and road.

Matthew Decore first cycled the Golden Triangle when he was 11 years old. That experience led him to a professional career where he represented Canada internationally at numerous events including the World Championships. His palmares include Runner-Up, 2003 Trans Rockies Mountain Bike Stage Race; Record-Holder, the Bow Cycle K80 and Le Raide Pierre Harvey; 2005 World Masters Games Champion; and 5-time Alberta provincial champion in mountain bike, cyclo cross, road and criterium.

We are a world class cardio club affiliated with the Alberta branch of the Canadian Cycling Association. 35 CAD Membership dues are collected annually.
